Ever since Facebook has opened up its doors and gone public, it seems as if there has been a slew of problems with the company. The only one that we are going to mention on this post is the fact that when we want to talk to our friends, it seems that if the website isn’t running very slow, the site comes up with an error stating that “Facebook Will Be Back Soon.” We have encountered a number of complaints and know that this issue isn’t just within the United States. Is anyone else encountering the same kind of problems?

Yesterday, Spotify and Coca-Cola announced a multifaceted strategic partnership that combines the global scale and reach of Coca-Cola with Spotify’s music technology platform to give consumers around the world unprecedented access to the music they love. Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, also announced that an iPad app is “in the works.”

The full press release can be read below:

Spotify and Coca-Cola Partner To Share Music With The World

April 18th 2012

Global Partnership Combines Music Expertise, Innovative Technology and Massive Global Reach to Share Music With the World

New York, NY/Atlanta, GA – April 18, 2012 – Spotify and Coca-Cola today announced a multifaceted strategic partnership that combines the global scale and reach of Coca-Cola with Spotify’s music technology platform to give consumers around the world unprecedented access to the music they love. The partnership will help fans discover new music, connect with other music lovers around the world and seamlessly share their experiences with friends both online and offline.

“Coca-Cola is the most recognized and respected brand in the world and we are proud to be their music partner,” said Daniel Ek, Founder and CEO, Spotify. “Spotify and Coca-Cola both believe that music, technology and creativity can connect people around the globe.”

“At Coca-Cola we have long recognized the power of music to connect people around the world,” said Joe Belliotti, Director, Global Entertainment Marketing, The Coca-Cola Company. “As we step up our activation through Coca-Cola Music, we are excited by the innovative music technology platform created by Spotify and the opportunity to create a truly global music network. The potential for this partnership is limitless.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Spotify will be the key underlying technology for Coca-Cola Music globally, supporting the brand’s mission to provide consumers universal access to music. In addition, Coca-Cola will integrate Spotify into its Facebook presence and Timeline, creating a seamless social music experience. This partnership takes advantage of the existing Spotify relationship with Facebook and the Coca-Cola Facebook audience of over 40 million fans to create a social experience that will reach millions of interconnected consumers around the world.

Music has been a big part of how Coca-Cola has engaged and built relationships with teen consumers throughout its 126 year history – from branded sheet music in the late 19th century to sponsoring radio shows to creating anthems for the brand’s marketing programs around global sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup. In recent years, with technology enabling the access and sharing of music on a global scale, Coca-Cola has accelerated the activation of music programs.

Supporting that legacy will be a key focus for Coca-Cola in 2013 and beyond with a commitment to giving fans around the world universal access to music. Under the terms of the new agreement, Spotify and Coca-Cola will be dedicated global partners in 2013 for this new campaign to be unveiled later in the year.

As part of the partnership, Coca-Cola will also leverage the Spotify API and platform to reach music enthusiasts through various applications – the first of which was built by independent developers during a two-day Spotify/Coca-Cola “hacker den” held in New York City on April 14-15. The new app will be unveiled for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Now available in more than 13 countries, Spotify is continuing its rapid worldwide expansion. The final component of the partnership will support that mission by creating unique consumer experiences around the globe that are fueled by music in both new and existing Spotify markets. Coca-Cola will also partner with Spotify as it launches its music service in new markets throughout 2012 and into 2013.

A Message About CISPA

by Facebook Washington DC on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 2:12pm

More than 845 million people trust Facebook with their information, and maintaining that trust is at the core of everything we do. Keeping the site secure to protect our users and their information requires a combination of technological innovations; around-the-clock coverage from our dedicated staff; and relationships within the broader security community.

A successful defense against bad actors also requires that we have timely information about cyber threats. One challenge we and other companies have had is in our ability to share information with each other about cyber attacks. When one company detects an attack, sharing information about that attack promptly with other companies can help protect those other companies and their users from being victimized by the same attack. Similarly, if the government learns of an intrusion or other attack, the more it can share about that attack with private companies (and the faster it can share the information), the better the protection for users and our systems.

A number of bills being considered by Congress, including the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (HR 3523), would make it easier for Facebook and other companies to receive critical threat data from the U.S. government. Importantly, HR 3523 would impose no new obligations on us to share data with anyone –- and ensures that if we do share data about specific cyber threats, we are able to continue to safeguard our users’ private information, just as we do today.

That said, we recognize that a number of privacy and civil liberties groups have raised concerns about the bill – in particular about provisions that enable private companies to voluntarily share cyber threat data with the government. The concern is that companies will share sensitive personal information with the government in the name of protecting cybersecurity. Facebook has no intention of doing this and it is unrelated to the things we liked about HR 3523 in the first place – the additional information it would provide us about specific cyber threats to our systems and users.

The overriding goal of any cybersecurity bill should be to protect the security of networks and private data, and we take any concerns about how legislation might negatively impact Internet users’ privacy seriously. As a result, we’ve been engaging directly with key lawmakers as well as industry and consumer groups about potential changes to the bill to help address privacy concerns.

The bill’s sponsors, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers and Ranking Member Dutch Ruppersberger, have stated publicly that they are working with privacy and civil liberties groups to address legitimate questions and concerns about how information might be shared with the government under the bill. They’ve made clear that the door is still open to change the bill before it comes to the House floor for consideration.

We hope that as Congress moves forward in considering this and any other cyber legislation, the result will be legislation that helps give companies like ours the tools we need to protect our systems and the security of our users’ information, while also providing those users confidence that adequate privacy safeguards are in place.

– Joel Kaplan, Vice President-U.S. Public Policy

Facebooks Timeline gives you an easy way to see the things you’ve shared, and collect all your best moments in a single place. It was first introduced last September and was available for developers only. Developers and users since then have had mixed feelings about Facebooks new layout. Up until now, people have been extremely hesitant about changing their profiles to this new layout due to privacy concerns and the fact that your “friends” can see nearly everything you have done since the birth of your Facebook. Starting today, Timeline will no longer be optional for Facebooks users. If you haven’t changed your Facebook profile to Timeline prior to today, I would definitely logon to Facebook and give your privacy settings a quick visit to make a few changes.

The company has done such a phenomenal job that most schools do not know what to do with them.

One school district that has struck the nation by surprise is McAllen ISD, located in south Texas. According to The Monitor, this “district has drawn praise and criticism for its decision to spend more than $20 million to purchase nearly 27,000 Apple devices for all students and teachers.” Now we are not talking about an initiative for some students in certain grade levels, we’re talking about every single teacher and student in the district. “Pre-kindergarten through second-grade students will get iPod Touch devices while third-through 12th-graders will get iPad 2s.”

How does the district plan to roll out an initiative like this? Well we have no idea but we do know one thing, by the end of this semester 140 teachers and 5,600 students will have their iPads and iPods in hand. The initiative will rollover to next school year.

This makes us wonder… Is this district Apple’s largest customer in the K-12 market?

Apple’s third-place with only 8.7 percent of the market, while the giants of Korea and Finland are out with 22.8 percent and 26.6 respectively. Though this time Apple leaves LG behind while LG and ZTE are tied for fourth. This time its not a good news for Goldstar, given that it has lost a staggering 42.2 percent of its market share in the last twelve months andNokia was the other loser, eating 8.2 percent. The reason behind it might be the world’s rejection of feature-phones as millions upgraded to smartphones.

Bill Gates in his recent interview with The Telegraph revealed about his secret letters to Steve Jobs. In the interview, Gates talked about his relationship with Steve, which had its highs and lows, but the competition was always healthy. During the interview he remarked that their friendship strengthened after the event at launch of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007.

On learning of Steve medical condition, Bill wrote him letter saying:

“I told Steve about how he should feel great about what he had done and the company he had built. I wrote about his kids, whom I had got to know…There was no peace to make. We were not at war. We made great products, and competition was always a positive thing. There was no [cause for] forgiveness.”

After Job’s passing away Bill was contacted by Jobs wife, Laurene Powell who explained the lack of respect between the two in Jobs biography.

She said: ‘Look, this biography really doesn’t paint a picture of the mutual respect you had.’ And she said he’d appreciated my letter and kept it by his bed.”

Bill often referred to Jobs as an “incredible genius,” and also mentioned in-spite of the critical comments that:

“Steve was an incredible genius who contributed immensely to the field I was in. We had periods, like the early Macintosh, when we had more people working on it than they did. And then we were competitors. The personal computers I worked on had a vastly higher [market] share than Apple until really the last five or six years, where Steve’s very good work on the Mac and on iPhones and iPads did extremely well. It’s quite an achievement, and we enjoyed each [other’s work]….He spent a lot of his time competing with me. There are lots of times when Steve said [critical] things about me. If you took the more harsh examples, you could get quite a litany.

Steve Jobs might be the greatest visionary of the century, and his vision lives on and will forever with the billion dollar company that he helped found.

We have seen smart watches before with either a limited skinned version of a smartphone OS–like the Motorola ACTV or with full Android OS capabilities. Though the new concept watch created by Indian designer Mithn Darji takes the idea of smart watch to a whole new level by packing in the full desktop OS version of Windows 8 and its Metro UI onto your wrist.

This device that serves as a watch also has a modular, removable Bluetooth earpiece for you to take calls.

This device has a full PC, WiFi for connectivity, and a phone radio onto a plastic wrist strap. There are also hardware keys for phone, quick launching the browser, music playback, and volume. The watch also has a charging connector that glows when plugged in.

The Windows 8 watch is still a concept now, but given Microsoft’s move to support ARM with Windows, the watch may be power efficient enough to last a day on a charge. Its intresting to see that Mithun Darji optated too choose Windows 8 platform rather than Windows phone OS.
